This short story by Eric Frank Russell was first published in Astounding Science Fiction (1958). To replace it or to free the enslaved planets, I don't really remember. Now the humans are taking the navy back to the alien empire and aim to take it down. The humans simply bided their time until they had learned the secret of FTL, how to build and maintain a space navy, and in the meantime the occupying force had become soft and were easily dispatched. A coup has occurred and the humans have slaughtered every alien on the planet except him. He suddenly finds that none of his men will respond to his command. Toward the end of the story, this comes back to haunt him. The governor thinks this sounds insane, ridiculous, and says a lot about a cowardly people like the humans. By doing so, the first person is thrown completely off balance and at the mercy of the second person. In human martial arts, however, the second person would instead seek to grab the first persons arm and guide them in the direction they are already going. In the alien martial arts, if one person shoves against the other, the second person seeks to shove back harder, thereby establishing might and dominance. Instead, it required him to train and master the skill of human martial arts, which are curiously different from the aliens' own form. The governor is mystified, why didn't his lieutenant simply take this black belt? The lieutenant explains that without earning the belt, it would be meaningless. He is chatting with his second in command who has just come in excitedly for having earned a black belt in human martial arts (I don't remember which one in particular, if it is even mentioned). The humans shrug and agree, then point out that this would simply show that their new masters were even more capable of defending Earth.įast forward and the new planetary governor finds himself bored. The aliens point out that they could conceivably be defeated by this hypothetical threat. Therefore it is in the Earthlings' best interests to be as valuable to their new masters as possible, not fight them. And if that happened, the empire would be forced to defend Earth as a valuable colony. But by the same token they must have value, and other out there (whether pirates or other empires) may seek to take their planet by force and kill the populace. But they point out that Earth doesn't have FTL technology and clearly the aliens do and could crush them if they resist. The aliens are nonplussed and ask if the earthlings realize just what is going on. When the ships land, the earthlings welcome them with open arms. When the invading force arrives, they spot no defenses, no military. I think the aliens look like humanoid snakes.īut Earth is different. The populace resists, is crushed and turned into slaves/subjects of the empire, leader of the invasion retires to a life of luxury as colonial governor. They've done this many times, they know the routine. Plot line goes like this: evil alien empire invade earth. I am looking for identification of a short story I read as part of an anthology around twenty years ago, and I think it might have been written by Harry Harrison but I am not certain. Microsoft recently expanded support for background effects to support more computers as of June 2020. Previously, you needed a modern CPU that supports AVX2. Microsoft have now relaxed this to include AVX, which includes devices like the Surface Go and older computers. Background Effects is still not available on phones. From the background effects options, choose Add New: To change your background in a meeting, select the three dots in the middle of the control bar in the meeting, and then from the menu, choose Background Effects. You will be able to select a custom background, then select and preview your background from the uploaded backgrounds. The best resolution to use is 1920×1080 and the best format to use is PNG. Some JPG files store information such as the camera rotation in file metadata, rather than actually rotating the image, which causes Teams to show the picture upside down or at an angle. Both Tom and Bill have voluntarily removed themselves from their communities – “I didn’t much like what happened to me in the world” Bill tells Tom – yet seem to be wistfully regretful. Though these have parallels within the 1950s storyline anyway. The two timelines do highlight how battles thought won are always up for “debate”, as well as the timelessness of the movie’s big themes of misplaced grief, and solitude versus loneliness. Both Michael and Madeline lost their mothers and both are alienated from their fathers while the threat to the environment in the present day has echoes of the 1950s vote between turning the area into a bird sanctuary or increasing hunting. The 1950s scenes are so beautiful and absorbing (I’ve already found myself rewatching those and fast-forwarding though the rest) that the sudden returns to the present often jarr, the parallels between the timelines sometimes too obvious. Soon memories of his childhood with the pelican babies resurface, reminding him what the area meant to him. His son-in-law Malcolm, heading up Mike’s old company, wants to allow sustainable mining protestors demand it be left as it is. Michael, now retired, has come home to vote on the fate of the land where he grew up. (In the first film Fingerbone Bill was played by David Gulpilil, who has a tiny cameo here as this Fingerbone Bill’s father.) It was previously filmed in the 1970s, with that version considered a triumph of the Australian New Wave I haven’t read or watched either, though the device employed in this new Storm Boy – frequent flash forwards to the older Michael (Geoffrey Rush) relating his pelican adventures to his ecologically-minded granddaughter Madeline (Morgan Davies) – is apparently a new addition. The film is based on Colin Thiele’s novella, familiar to generations of Australian schoolchildren. He takes them home, where he and Bill use the outboard motor to mash up fish which Michael then feeds to the still-blind and featherless chicks with a pipette. It’s on one of these trips he meets Fingerbone Bill (Trevor Jamieson), an Aboriginal man living alone in a tent on the dunes, and discovers three pelican chicks whose mother has been shot by hunters. By day while his father fishes from their small motorboat, Michael plays on the beach or takes his little raft around the shallow bay. There is some home schooling, and many nights in front of the fire while gorgeous sunsets or screaming gales frame their house outside. Finn Little as Storm Boy, with his baby pelicans I really loved the La Salette wine at Vezer, which is a unique combination of wines, petite sirah and zinfandel, and at 90 dollars a bottle was a real treat, and it's a wine that deliberately ages well, so expect me to pick that one in the near future. Who knew this even existed? But I loved them as well as the salty almonds that came with them. What kept the flavors of each of the wines so strong was we were treated to specialty crackers that cleansed your palette in between wine sips. The tastings included the one white the 2014 Estate Verdelho, as well as the 2013 Cabernet Franc, 2013 Estate Zinfandel, 2011 La Salette, and the 2012 Estate Black Muscat- Franci. They seem to specialize in reds at Vezer, as five of our pours for our tasting were all lovely deep colored reds. You can't go wrong with a flavor profile like that. Vezer's wines are all aromatic, sweet and bold, with a combination of flavors of from fruits such as berries, cranberries, bing cherries and strawberries. I had only peripherally heard of this region before, but today my friends and I were given a front seat introduction to three of the wineries along the Suisun Valley Road exit off of Interstate 80. It's easy to get them confused, as this one is called the Mankas Corner Tasting Room because it's literally on the corner of Mankas Corner Road, the other is called the Blue Victorian (home to said blue house) and it's just up the street along Suisun Valley Road. This is one of two tasting rooms in the valley owned by Vezer that the public can come to try their wines. A true definition of what a staycation is supposed to be all about. Many people don't even know that this region of wine growing even exists so it's nice to discover hidden gems in the Bay Area. So we are excited to go and have a fresh tasting of what is in their current list so we can talk about what’s new over there.Vezer Family Vineyard is at the epicenter of the wine revolution going on right now in the heart of the Suisun Valley in Solano County. We haven’t, for various reasons, been to Vezer recently. Maybe they don’t have the Napa name on them, but they can contend with the big boys given a few years below their belt. They age just beautifully giving you a wine that truly shines. What I mean by that is that they really benefit by being put away for a few years to mature. Everyone loved it who tried it even picky me.įor me, when talking about Vezer wines, I would describe most of their wines as “cellar wines”. We opened it on our niece’s 21st birthday celebration dinner and the wine was as memorable as the celebration itself. Rich deep tones of berry, smooth and satisfying. We recently opened one of those gift bottles from Frank, a 2006 Zinfandel that had been stored in our cellar and it was absolutely beautiful. (Yep, you guessed it a 60’s themed event where people dress up in costume and come for a great time). Vezer hosts many concerts throughout the summer months and I have consumed many, many bottles of this wine whilst enjoying bands at events like VezerStock. A great balanced wine good for barbecues, picnics, and just for easy sipping. It is a Portuguese white wine grape in keeping with the family’s background. One of the wines I love to drink when I am there on a lovely sunny afternoon is their Verdelho. The sea of fall color you see are all grape vines. Thank you, Vezer Family Vineyards for all the joy and happy memories you have brought to our lives.Ī canon protecting the vineyards at Vezer ranch. It is also special to our group of wine friends who came together as a group in this place our bond was formed there, thanks to Frank Vezer’s generosity. Some of my favorite photos that I have ever taken are on their properties. I was just starting out with my first camera and I didn’t really know what I was doing. These people know how to party! Frank invited me to their home and ranch vineyard allowing me to photograph there. They made us honorary members of their wine club and we have attended many of their events. When I was going through serious health issues, they gave us many bottles of wine to wish me better health. The owners, Frank and Liz, have been unbelievably generous to us. We have many happy memories of their summer concerts, meet-ups with friends in their gorgeous gardens, a wedding, and the friendship we have with the Vezer family and staff. There are many reasons for our fondness for this little family run place. It is a bit off the beaten track and not in Napa at all but in Suisun Valley. Vezer Family Vineyards holds a very special place in our hearts. The Germans, recognising their untenable position, withdrew from the Marne towards the north. When Operation Marne-Rheims ended in July, the Allied supreme commander, the French Ferdinand Foch, ordered a counter-offensive which became the Second Battle of the Marne. The Germans had advanced to the Marne River but failed to achieve a decisive breakthrough. The German Spring Offensives on the Western Front, which began on 21 March 1918 with Operation Michael, had petered out by July. Dateīritish forces took 188,700 prisoners and captured 2,840 gunsįrench forces took 139,000 prisoners and captured 1,880 gunsĪmerican forces took 44,142 prisoners and captured 1,481 gunsīelgian forces took 14,500 prisoners and captured 414 guns The term "Hundred Days Offensive" does not refer to a specific battle or unified strategy, but rather the rapid series of Allied victories starting with the Battle of Amiens. The offensive essentially pushed the Germans out of France, forcing them to retreat beyond the Hindenburg Line, and was followed by an armistice. These might clue you in to what regiment your ancestor served in and where/when he may have fought. The Hundred Days Offensive was the final period of the First World War, during which the Allies launched a series of offensives against the Central Powers on the Western Front from 8 August to 11 November 1918, beginning with the Battle of Amiens. For even deeper research, you can use maps like this one in conjunction with WWI service and pension records. The map is also notable for its account of American accomplishments in the war in the top right, including symbols for each of the 42 divisions that were deployed. Additional markings on the map indicate battle lines in July and November. American divisions are indicated by red-and-white striped boxes, while German divisions are indicated by various black and grey boxes. The map indicates divisions from different countries using colored boxes, with the French in blue (infantry solid blue, cavalry blue and white) and British in red (cavalry solid red, cavalry red and white). As you can see, the detailed colorful map shows the state of the war in September 1918. Their assault between August and November of 1918 forced an armistice on November 11 of that year. Seeking a speedy end to a war notable for its months of stalemate, Allied commanders launched a series of successful attacks on the German front (called the Hindenburg Line). The map above (from the David Rumsey Map Collection) shows the Western Front during the war’s final months, including the Hundred Days Offensive. If you have ancestors who fought in the Great War, you might look for wartime maps. WWI servicemen had to combat “trench foot,” mustard gas, Spanish influenza and deadly new semi-automatic weaponry. Combatants from across the world-including some of your ancestors from the United States-braved horror after horror. Its death and destruction were unprecedented, and more than 16 million people died during the four-year conflict. World War I is known as the “War to End All Wars” with good reason. This culminates in a final level that’s throwing the same three enemy types at you that you encountered in its first 30 minutes. It’s not just that Fracked isn’t very long, it’s that it doesn’t have enough space to really flesh out its own concepts. True, nDreams’ last game, Phantom: Covert Ops, was a similar length, but the slower stealth pacing and evolving gameplay ideas helped round it out in a satisfactory way. Ultimately, though, the sheer quality of Fracked’s campaign makes the sting of its shortness hurt all the more. Kudos to whoever had the idea to show the actual bullets inside a weapon clip as a clever way of keeping count of your ammo in VR. Sealing the deal is the game’s fantastic art style and great soundtrack, which feels like playing through the pages of a comic book. You also get limited-use special weapons like magnums, shotguns and grenade launchers which are indeed helpful but also take ages to disappear after being used, leaving you exposed to enemy gunfire without a means of attacking.įortunately, these moments are anomalies most of Fracked’s action is polished, frantic, and fitting proof that you can serve up fast-paced action in VR and still have it feel native to the platform. They really wrestle to comprehend how to reach you, turning what should be one of the game’s climactic encounters into a mess, and that’s far from the game’s only bug. Some of the enemy AI struggles to find a path towards you, which is made apparent in one particular fight that asks you to get one brute to stand in a certain location. There are hiccups in this formula, though. The same goes for some of the platforming segments which graduate from the Nathan Drake school of ‘How to Climb When Everything’s Coming Off the Wall’. It can take some getting used to and never really gives you full control but, like so many other elements of the game, it offers a strong foundation to potentially build off of in the future and one of the most platform’s most incredible spectacles where items tumble past you and vehicles explode in the background. Skiing, meanwhile, works well with hands-free controls, allowing you to return fire as you race snowmobiles and weave between guard posts. The game is essentially an arena shooter and, while it doesn’t do a great job of disguising that, it does have some of the right ingredients to pile on the pressure with enemy types that screech as they sprint towards you in hopes of blowing themselves up or tougher, armored foes that first need to be knocked down so you can blast their power source. Most of the game’s big encounters take place in wide-open, multi-faceted environments with objectives that often ask you to hold out for a certain amount of time as the enemies pour in. We have seen this in other games but it’s expertly applied here, allowing you to carve a path through enemies before hunkering down on the floor to recharge health. nDreams does a great job of removing the fuss from the experience – taking cover is simply a matter of grabbing the edge of an object and then using your hand to lean in and out of harm’s way. Its weapons, meanwhile, are butchy and erratic, trading out precision fire for spray and pray chaos. It’s rare to play a game that feels like it was really tailor-made for Sony’s platform and its cumbersome Move controllers, but the smart use of your off-hand as a virtual joystick and a streamlined reloading system keep Fracked’s focus on the action, and not fighting a control scheme.Īs a result, Fracked pulls off some of the more agile VR combat we’ve seen whilst retaining immersion and intensity. In its best moments, Fracked is a winning mix of brains and brawn with meaty first-person combat, set to the backdrop of a remote mountain facility, that offers hot-footed gunplay finely tuned to PSVR. Let’s first focus on what works here, though, because there’s quite a lot of it. You’ll be having enough fun in Fracked that you won’t really want it to stop, but it isn’t long before it runs out of slope. Usually, I try to refrain from making a game’s length an issue in VR reviews if anything for the sake of not sounding like a broken record, but here it really is a sticking point. Most players familiar with VR shooters will get maybe three hours of gameplay out of Fracked’s eight-level campaign. It’s a brilliant, explosive campaign that scales to great heights with its arena-based firefights before plummeting downhill in breakneck skiing segments. The metaphor might be overused but Fracked really is a rollercoaster ride. |
